Dams can lead to the displacement of a large number of people who happened to live in the area when the dam is built. Rehabilitation of these people causes significant social problems as people are generally unwilling to abandon areas they have lived in for generations. For example, in the construction of the Sardar Sarovar dam project in Gujarat, large number of people were displaced and not properly rehabilitated.
