Major uses of building Dams are :-

1) Dams are built to provide water for human consumption, for irrigating arid and semiarid lands, or for use in industrial processes.

2) Many dams are built for more than one purpose; for example, water in a single reservoir can be used for fishing, to generate hydroelectric power, and to support an irrigation system.

3) A dam is constructed mainly for power generation, irrigation/water supply or flood prevention.

4) Flood control dams impound floodwaters and then either release them under control to the river below the dam or store or divert the water for other uses.
