how are distances shown on map ? find from the below para.

We cannot understand actual distances by studiying the map. We need instructions. Thisis waht the map scale provides. It helps us to calculate distances. Every map has a scale. A scale on a map is the ratio of distance between the place on the map and its corresponding distance on the ground. This ratio is represented by units of measure such as centimetre or inch to a metre or kilometre. The units of measure may vary from map to map. For example: 1 cm: 500 m, which means 1 cm on the map is equal to 500 m on the earth. If the area shown is larger, the scale can be represented in larger units. for example: 1 ft: 10,000 ft. This means that 1 foot on the map represents 10,000 feet on the earth.
