elements are classified on the basis of no. of atoms that are present in their molecule which exist in elemental state(homogenic molecule)

Based on atomicity, elements could be monoatomic like Zn, Fe etc with only 1 atom, diatomic like Cl2, Br2, O2 etc. with 2 atoms, triatomic like O3,i.e. ozone etc., tetratomic like phosphorus P4 or polyatomic like sulphur, S8.
