Answer:

Here is something to ponder and cheer about for the `greens’. The use of electronic voting machines for the Lok Sabha polls will help save two lakh trees in the country.

Though it may sound a bit too stretched, here are the figures.

In the last Lok Sabha elections, 10.25 lakh voting machines were used for 67,14,87,930 voters in the country. If ballot papers were used instead of the voting machines, around 8,000 tonnes of paper would have been used.

To produce so much of paper, at least 1.5 lakh trees are required to be felled. This time, the number of voters is 71.4 crore. There will be a commensurate increase in the number of electronic voting machines.

If ballot papers are used this time, at least 2 lakh trees would be required to be cut. The electronic voting machines (EVMs) were used for the first time on an experimental basis in 16 Assembly segments in the country.

In the elections held in November 1998, EVMs were used in five Assembly segments each in Madhya Pradesh and Rajasthan and six segments in New Delhi. In Kerala, though EVMs were used on an experimental basis in 56 booths in the byelections held for the North Paravur Assembly segment in 1982, the election was declared void by the Supreme Court in March 1984.

Then the apex court had reportedly pointed out that under the Peoples Representation Act, 1951, reference was made only to paper ballots.

Later, after the Information Technology Act, 2002, was passed, the use of electronic voting machines became legal. The Act recognised the information collected through the EVMs machines as proper documents
