Adaptations of fish to live in water are-
1. The Gills - Gills are an important adaptation of the fish to live in water as they support respiration. Gills are respiratory apparatus present in fishes that enable the fish to intake the oxygen present in the water, in a dissolved form. The gills are characterized by increased surface area that facilitates the exchange of gases. Osmoregulation and hormone production are tertiary functions of the gills with the predominant function being respiration.
2. Fins - There are fins present in the fishes that enable the fish to swim swiftly through the water.
3. The shape of the fish body - Fish are categorized under aquatic vertebrates. They inhabit a stream-lined body that helps the fish to move in water without difficulty, by minimizing resistance and interruptions faced under the water.
4. External adaptations namely the scales- Scales are present on the outward body of the fish that protects them from external harm and damage.
5. The tail - The tail of the fish helps them to maintain an equilibrium. While swimming the tail encourages to sweep the water that helps the fish to move forward.
