Floodplains are formed when a meander erodes sideways as it travels downstream. When a river breaks its banks, it leaves behind layer of alluvium. These gradually build up to create the floor of the plain.

Excess rain or bursting of dams can cause flood...
In forests, there are so much less chances of floods.....because trees does not allow much water to settle down...
