A floodplain is an area of land which is covered in water when a river bursts its banks. Floodplains form due to both erosion and deposition. Erosion removes any interlocking spurs , creating a wide, flat area on either side of the river.

Flood Plains are formed as:
- Flood plain is an area of land adjacent to a stream or river
- It stretches from the banks of its canal to the base of the enclosing walls of the valley
- The soils usually consist of clays, silts, sands, and gravel deposited during floods.
- Floodplains are formed by deposition on the inside of river meanders and by overflow.
