Terminal geminal dihalides ( i.e. geminal dihalides in which both the halogen atoms are present on terminal carbon atom ) when boiled with aq. alkali (aq. KOH) undergo hydrolysis to give an unstable diol. This unstable diol eliminates a water molecule to give aldehyde.
