Answer. Fossils are preserved traces of living organisms.when organisms die they are buried under the soil or ground (or under what ever) most of its parts would decompose except some parts like bone ect

Also if a dead insect gets caught in hot mud it will not decompose quickly leading to retain an impression of the insect on the mud .thus in many way fossils can be formed . One. Way of finding its age is by carbon dating other is that when we dig the fossils the ones we find closest to the surface are newer ones and the ones deeper are the older ones
