As per the act of 1878, the forests in India were classified into three categories which are-
- Reserved forest- these were the densest forests. No doubt an enormous amount of flora and fauna was found in this forest. They also had rich sources for various natural resources. They were completely prohibited from the villagers. They were not allowed to enter them.
- Protected Forest- These forests were also dense and rich but some part of them was available for the villagers to collect wood. Still, they were protected by the villagers.
- Village forests- These were the forests located close to the villages and were there for the use of villagers. Villagers were allowed to exploit them for their personal use, not commercial use.
