it occurs when a spasm contracts the diphagram a large sheets of muscle that seprates the chest cavity from the abdominal cavity.
reason of stoppage of it due to drinking water is:- there is a large nerve which runs from your brain to your stomach known as the vagus nerve. when you drink a large glass of water you will stimulate the vagus nerve which may stop it

Hicup is caused by the sudden movement of the diaphragm . This causes the air to rush into the lungs, followed by quick closing of the vocal cords. This produces a sound.Drinking cold water relieves the irritation produced in the diaphragm and as a result of which it continues the normal movement.
