Intercellular spaces formed in higher plants is due to the process called lysogeny or schizogeny.

EXPLANATION:

Lysogeny is a process through which specific number of cells die inorder to create a intercellular space between two cells, whereas schizogeny is a process through which cells differentiate that is change in shape and size giving rise to intercellular spaces between two adjacent cells. This intercellular space is required for the cell to facilitate movement of gas and water in and out of the cell.
