In "Hunger", Kasim and Rizwan are two faces of the same coin. Rizwan is  educated but a struggling journalist by profession. Kasim on the other hand, is a hawker and makes a living by selling old clothes. However, poverty and hunger are common to both of them.
Rizwan and Kasim's family background is also similar, but in different ways. Two years ago, the responsibility of Rizwan's family, fell on Rizwan, when his father died . His mother fell ill and due to financial constraints, his younger bother's had to dropout of school. Kasim's paternal side family, were all physical labourers and did not earn enough money to make both ends meet. With no land in the village. Out of hunger and cold, his grandfather passed away and his father starved. Kasim earns five hundred rupees a month and need to looks after his family, with the same.
The only difference between is the two is that, Rizwan is an educated young man whereas Kasim is an uneducated middle aged man. However their views on life are different. Kasim is a pessimist and is content with his earnings as a physical labourer. He believes that life will never change for him. Rizwan however is optimistic and believes that things will get better for him,
