The square of the time period of the planet is proportional to the cube of the semi major axis of a planet to the sun.

    ie,   T²∝a³

Newton's law of gravitation

Every body in the universe attract every other body with a force which is directly proportional to the product of their masses and inversely proportional to the square of the distance between the two masses.

    ie, F∝m1m2/r²

Both are laws are involved in finding the distance between two masses
