Laterite is a soil and rock type rich in iron and aluminium and is commonly considered to have formed in hot and wet tropical areas. Nearly all lateritesare of rusty-red coloration, because of high iron oxide content. They develop by intensive and prolonged weathering of the underlying parent rock.

Due to the high temperature and heavy rainfall with alternate wet and dry periods this soil formed. As a result of high rainfall, lime and silica are leached away, and soils rich in iron oxide and aluminium compound are left behind.

Hope this helps
