Lava plateaus are formed when landscape is covered by lava and volcanic ash The huge volume of volcanic materials needed to produce a lava plateau comes from an event known as a flood basalt eruption, an eruption extreme in both extent and duration.

Formation of lava plateau:

  • Many plateaus form is a magma that is present deep inside the Earth pushes toward the exterior but fail to break through the crust.
  • Lava plateaus are formed by exceedingly fluid basaltic lava during several successive outbreaks through numerous vents without violent explosions (quiet eruptions). These eruptions are low because of the low viscosity of lava so that it is very fluid and comprises a small number of trapped gases.
