Urban Local Bodies-
Local bodies that exist for the urban areas or cities are known as municipalities . Big cities are constituted into municipal corporations. Both municipalities and municipal corporations are controlled by the elected bodies consisting of people's representatives or called as councillors. Members of the municipal corporations and municipalities are elected on the basis of universal adult suffrage for a period of five years. These municipal corporations and municipalities are in charge of wards (subdivision of a district or a town/city) according to its population and its representatives are elected from each ward.
The members of municipalities in small town and cities elect a President among themselves to preside over and conduct meetings of the municipalities where as in municipal corporation, such an officer is called the Mayor.
The municipal bodies of India are vested with a long list of functions delegated to them by the state governments under the municipal legislation. These functions broadly relate to public health, welfare, regulatory functions, public safety, public infrastructure and development activities.
