The 74th Amendment of the Indian Constitution has provided for three types of municipalities known by different names in urban areas.
1.Municipal Corporation for major cities: It is situated in large urban areas and have greater autonomy in functioning. It is an elected body for five years. The head of the Municipal Corporation is the Mayor who presides over the meetings of the Corporation and looks after its functioning. It has various committees to look after its day to day affairs.These are Education Committees, Public Health Committees.
2. Municipal Council for smaller cities: It is found in smaller cities.It is an elected body for five years. The elected members elect the Chairman and Deputy Chairman from among themselves. The administrative affairs of the Municipal Council are carried out by an engineer or education officer appointed by the State Government.
3. Nagar Panchayats are found in the areas which are on the way of transition from rural to urban. It is a small elected body of ten members. The Chairman is elected from among themselves.
