For active metals metal carbonates are formed by simple displacement reaction.
Metal + H2C03 --> Metal carbonate + H2

For less reactive metals also displacement but in other way.
Eg- Copper
AgCO3 + Cu ---> CuCO3 + Ag

here is your answer

when carbonates are formed when metal reacts oxide with carbon dioxide.

Example: when calcium hydroxide reacts with carbon dioxide it forms calcium carbonate and water

Ca(OH)2+CO2=CaCO3+H2O

hope this helps you
