viruses are regarded as being in the borderline between living and non living entities.They are unique.They can exhibit both the characteristics of living and non-organisms .when they float in air or as settled on a door knob they are non-living like say salt or sugar .In fact they can be stored in jars for many years.However,when they come in contact with some suitable plant,animal or bacteria,they show the characteristics of living organisms .They infect the cell and quickly multiply inside the cell.
