Microorganism plays very important role in agriculture because the soilmicrobes (bacteria and fungi) are essential for decomposing organic matter and recycling old plant material. Some soil bacteria and fungi form relationships with plant roots that provide important nutrients like nitrogen or phosphorus.

Some bacteria and blue green algae (cyanobacteria) ; are able to fix atmospheric nitrogen into usable forms of salts of nitrogen. They arecalled biological nitrogen fixers.

Rhizobium lives in symbiotic relationship in the root nodules of leguminous plants and enriches the soil with nitrogen compounds.

Some cyanobacteria do the same in rice fields and in the association with the roots of cycas plants.

These bacteria and blue green algae help the farmers.
