There is a space for public discussion on the mistakes and there is room for correction as government can not hide their mistakes.

The first step is identifying that a mistake has been made…

The full effects of any policy decision are often not fully visible until years after the decision has been made. They take time to organise and implement, and then some time before the effects of all the resulting new practices (often ones to get around new issues) are know.

We should have a pretty good idea after 4 or 5 years, which is anther reason why democratic government terms typically last 4 to 5 years.

The next step is reaction.

When the political term comes to an end the existing government may realise some change or modifications need to be made, or not. If not, the opposition will certainly offer changes which would appear to correct the problems.

It is then up to the people who they choose. In truth, almost whatever you do there will be resulting unfairness and injustices. You can’t please everyone, so you please enough to get elected.

As an example and using the UK. Sometimes the masses will choose to sacrifice the living standards of some communities such as Fishermen or some poor towns and inner city areas, by effectively throwing them “under the bus” for what the establishment tells them is “the greater good”, and sometimes they will regret it and will not.
