Hey !

The main reason for the phases of the moon is the revolution of the moon around the Earth.

During the course of a month (27.32 days in exact figures), the moon circles once around the Earth.

The amount of the moon that can be seen on each day, depends on position of moon (i.e., where moon is) in its revolution around the Earth.

Actually, the half of the moon is lit by the sun just as that of Earth, while the other half is in darkness when moon is at certain points of the orbit.

However, it is not possible to identify which side of the moon is lit by the Sun. However, the side of the moon that is lit by the sun will always points toward the direction of Sun.

We can only see the moon just because the sunlight reflects back to Earth from it's surface. It all just depends upon the position of the moon, amount of sunlight received, what part of sunlight is getting reflected, and the place where we are watching it.
