Mummies are preserved by a process called mummification.

  1. The body is washed.
  2. Organs such as the brain, intestines, liver, lungs, stomach are removed. The heart is kept intact.
  3. The body is packed in salt to remove moisture.
  4. The body is cleaned and oiled.
  5. The body is packed with sawdust and rags and the open cuts sealed with wax.
  6. The body is bandaged with 20 layers of linen.
  7. A death mask is placed over the bandages.
  8. The bandaged body is shrouded.
  9. The body is then placed in a decorated mummy case.
