The answer is erosion by the wind which geographers call abrasion. When the wind blows in some hot deserts it will pick up millions of grains of sand. When the wind hits an outcrop of rock the sand it is carrying is blasted against it. The wind and therefore the erosion are most powerful between the ground and a height of about one metre. This means that the base of the exposed rock erodes faster than the top. Over many decades the ‘stalk’ or supporting pillar or pedestal of rock becomes narrower and narrower until it can’t support the weight above any more. The mushroom rock then collapses.
