How are ocean currents responsible for hindering navigation? State two ways.
Answers
Answer:
Ocean water is on the move, affecting your climate, your local ecosystem, and the seafood that you eat. Ocean currents, abiotic features of the environment, are continuous and directed movements of ocean water. These currents are on the ocean’s surface and in its depths, flowing both locally and globally.
Winds, water density, and tides all drive ocean currents. Coastal and sea floor features influence their location, direction, and speed. Earth’s rotation results in the Coriolis effect which also influences ocean currents. Similar to a person trying to walk in a straight line across a spinning merry-go-round, winds and ocean waters get deflected from a straight line path as they travel across the rotating Earth. This phenomenon causes ocean currents in the Northern Hemisphere to veer to the right and in the Southern Hemisphere to the left.

ocean water is mobile it has different temperature based on the various locations and it classified as warm current and cold current.
It has regular pattern mostly those that flow from equatorial regions are called warm current and those flow from polar regions are called cold current regions.
The movement of ocean current is influced by lot of factors such as
1. platernary winds has dominant influence
2. warm water is ligher and rises slowly moves towards poles (NORTH ATLANTIC DRIFT)
while cold water is heavy and sinks (COLD LABRADOR CURRENT) - since it originated from artic it has low salinity and also a cold current
3.SALINITY - The water of high salinity is denser hence it sinks and flows along the bottom towards low salinity area, where as the low salinity water flows to high salinity water along the surface of the ocean water.
4.earth rotation - In northern hemisphere it diverts the water along the clock wise direction.
In sourthern hemisphere it diverts along the anti -clock wise direction
TRADE AND COMMERCE :-
!.The meeting of cold and warm currents provides the best fishing sites in the world, allowing the commercial exploitation of the fish stocks on a large scale. Example: The confluence of the warm Gulf Stream current, and the cold Labrador current.
2.It helps in navigation of ships and promotes world trade as most of the logistics are carried over sea router.
IT provides lot of information about the on going issues like climate change, threats to marine resources and organisms.
