An oxbow lake starts out as a curve in a river. A lake forms as the river finds a different, shorter, course. The meander becomes an oxbow lake along the side of the river.

After the long periods of time the meander become very curved and eventually the neck of meander become very narrow and river cuts through the neck during flood cutting of meander and forming a oxbow lakes.
