certain enzymes work on it, first in the stomach as the gastric juice is released , it contains pepsin which acts on carbohydrates and further in the small intestine, the pancreatic juice containing trypsin which digests proteins acts on it and hence the proteins and carbs get digested.

in the intestine, pancreas secretes :
trypsin, which converts proteins into amino acids,
lipase, which converts emulsified fats into fatty acids and glycerol and
amylase which converts carbohydrates to glucose
the lining of small intestine contains villi (increases the surface area for absorption) , in which these nutrients are absorbed and sent to various parts of body for energy.
