Anything in our environment which can be used to satisfy our needs is considered a resource if it is technically accessible, economically viable, and culturally acceptable.
Classification of resources
The two most common resource classifications are:
Natural resources – Natural resources can be defined as the resources that exist on the planet independent of human actions.
Human resources – Human resources refers to the individuals who make up an organization’s, business sector’s, industry’s, or economy’s workers.
Natural Resource
Natural resource can be further classified as
Renewable resource – These are the resources which can reproduced or renewed through various mechanical, chemical or physical process.
Non-renewable resource – These are the resources which takes millions of years for its formation. Examples like coal, petroleum, natural gas etc.
Natural resources are classified according to their development and use are,
Potential resources – The resources that are present in a specific region and can be used in the future are classified as potential resources.
Actual resources – Actual resources are the resources where quantity is known which are being used in the present.
Classification of Resources

(a) On the basis of origin – biotic and abiotic
(b) On the basis of exhaustibility – renewable and non-renewable
(c) On the basis of ownership – individual, community, national and international
(d) On the basis of status of development – potential, developed stock and reserves.
