How are sea waves formed

The sea waves are the result of flown by friction. When wind flow due to friction between surface of sea and air, disturbance is created on surface resulting in crests and troughs hence form a wave. Waves of water does not move horizontally. They only move up and down.

You can check that by yourself by doing a small experiment. Take some water in a large vessel or say a tub. Put a small floating object say cork at any place. Now disturb the water from middle portion. A ripple will be produced. The cork will move up and down but will not leave its position.

But the waves produced in sea waves can take objects with them due to flow of wind.

Hope it helps.

Poorva15: It has. Some waves which we say tides are formed due to gravitational pull.
Poorva15: Of course they are but you must know that tides are also waves. I'm sure about it. You may also check.
Poorva15: Okay lemme ask you a simple question what are sea waves?
Poorva15: Okay Lemme edit my answer then. Thank you telling me the difference. I was considering sea waves as the waves formed on surface of sea. Thank you :)

The main driving factor of generation of sea waves is 'Wind'.

So how wind is responsible for the formation of cool sea waves ?

Let me explain by considering a simple phenomenon that you notice daily.

Take water in a beaker and blow across it.What do you observe ?

You'll simply observe a sort of ripples or what we say waves. Same, apply the principle here too. Winds blows out across the sea, and the waves are generated that come ashore .

But then you must have noticed that after the waves crash ashore they again recede back, why doe this happen ?

Now let's again consider a simple phenomenon.
A bathtub is full upto brim. Now when you sit the water firsts goes to the edge of the bathtub and then again comes back in a to and fro motion.

Simply apply this principle in waves too.So that's why when the waves reach the shore they again recede back.

The wave is created deep below the sea. When the wave moves to the shore the upper part of the wave  comparatively moves faster than its lower part .This happens because the lower part is in contact with sea floor.

While coming ashore the depth of the sea decreases, and the dragging force on the lower part of the wave increases that makes it move more slower. But the upper part moves faster and then it suddenly rolls .This is called breaking point of a wave which means a point where the wave takes a rolling shape and then crashes on the shore.

Hope This Helps You
