seismic waves are ejected towards the earth from the transmitter. After hitting the earth the waves are reflected back and is sensed by the receiver. the time duration is calculated between the generation and reflection of the wave. that determines the depth. more time taken means more is the depth. this way the topography of the earth is measured.
