Some microorganisms (bacteria ) live in root nodules of plants (rhizobium) and convert the atmospheric nitrogen to useable form like ammonia and nitrites.
So, some microorganisms break down the atmospheric nitrogen to nitrites and other microorganisms beak nitrites to nitrates and others brake it to ammonia which plants can use . The microorganisms thus play a vital role in nitrogen fixation
