It is nothing but the digit.

Place value
Place Value= Face value * Weight of digit

In 3.441, both 4's differ by their weights though they have same face value.

weight of First 4 is one-tenth= 1/10 [i.e., 10^-1]
weight of Second 4 is one hundredth = 1/100 [i.e., 10^ -2]

So First 4 is greater than second by 10.
