The red Indians(Men of chief Seattle) believe in the traditional values of their ancestors and believed that their forefathers would guide them on every occasion. To show respect, they go and worship their ancestors ashes and are therefore sacred to them.
On the contrary, the Whites(mentioned like this in the book) do not worship their ancestors as they do not follow the same tradition as the Red Indians and they wander of away from their ancestors such that it looks like they do not care of the dead. They do not worship the ashes of their forefathers like the Red Indians.
