A bird's foot delta forms at a river where waves, tides and currents are very weak.Deposition of large amounts of fine sediments occurs at the river mouth. The deposits block the channel of the river, which then divides into few distributaries. Each distributary continues to deposit its load maintaining levees as it extends into the sea. Some distributaries extended further than others creating the shape of a bird's foot.

There are different types of delta landforms which are naturally created in the river mouth.

One of the most common delta landforms is the bird's foot delta which looks like a foot of a bird.

This type of delta is mainly formed due to the extremely slow river current in the river mouth and the previous depositions divides the delta formation in different sections which creates the shape of a bird's foot.
