When cell is in interphase(resting stage), the nucleus of the cell consists all chromosomes put together as a long thread like structure, ie., DNA in double helixes structure. In the beginning of first phase of the cell division called prophase, the long thread like helical DNA condenses and divide into 46 chromosomes according to their characteristics and become clearly visible in the second phase of cell division called metaphase. That is how the chromosomes are formed within the nuclear cells.
