The constitution directed various areas of government jurisdiction into 3 lists

1. Union list - it contains subjects of national importance such as defence , foreign affairs ,currency and communication.these subjects are under the jurisdiction of union govt and only parliament can pass laws in these subjects

2. State List - it contains subjects of state and local importance like police , social services, health etc which are under the jurisdiction of state govt. only state legislature can pass laws on these subjects

3. Concurrent List - it contains subjects of common interest of both the union government as well as state govt such as education , trade unions ,Forrest , marriage, adoption, popular control ,criminal law etc in which both parliament and state legislature can pass laws .in case of any conflict between union and state laws ,the laws passed by parliament will prevail
