How are the direction of current and that of electric field related?

Current is carried by free electrons the conventional current is in direction opposite to electron flow

No. The current always flows in the same direction as the electric field. The electrons flow in the opposite direction, because they are negatively charged. Current is flow of charges, and charge movement is decided by field direction.
