How are the elements with variable valency named ?

ᴀɴsᴡᴇʀ :–

If an element exhibits two different positive valencies, then

1. For the lower valency, use the suffix -OUS at the end of the name of the metal

2. For the higher valency, use the suffix -IC at the end of the name of the metal.

Lets understand here with an example,

(1) Iron (Fe) can show a valency of 2 and 3.

Therefore the lower valency element, here 2 is named as ferrous(Fe).

And higher valency, here 3 is named as ferric(Fe).

Some more example :–

(2) Copper (Cu) can show a valency of 1 and 2.

(3) Phosphorus can show a valency of 3 and 5.

Additional Information :–

Valency of an element is decided by numer of outermost shell electrons (valence electron).

◼ If an element exhibit more than one valency . This is known as variable valency.

the valency of Hydrogen is 1 as it has one electron in its outermost shell and requires one electron to become stable. Some elements differ in their capacity to combine with other elements depending on the nature of the reaction; this property is called variable valency.that's good you from??
