Simply said-
Many elements exhibit variable valency means they have more than one valency --from the property you know named it variable means changes it is due to element acquire more stablibilty and have two or more unpaired electrons. For example --Fe2+ and Fe3+ ..Fe2+ form FeO with O2- but Fe3+
form Fe2O3 with Same O2-.
