In lungs, balloon-like structures called alveoli are present that provide maximum surface area for the exchange of gases. The alveoli have very thin walls and contain an extensive network of blood vessels to facilitate the exchange of gases.

Question

How are the lungs designed in human beings to maximise the area for exchange of gases?

Answer

there are millions of alveoli in the lungs. The presence of millions of alveoli in the lungs provide a very large area for the exchange of gases and the availability of large surface area maximises the exchange of gases. for example if else all alveolar from the to human lungs are unfolded they would give an area of about 80 square metres

Hope it helps you ♥️
