In the lungs, the bronchi divide into smaller branches called bronchioles. These bronchioles end in alveolar sac where the gaseous exchange takes place. There are millions of alveoli in human lungs. The walls of the alveoli contain an extensive network of blood vessels. Through this, gases are exchanged between capillaries and the air sacs. These alveoli increase the surface area for exchange of gases. If all the alveoli of two lungs of human are unfolded, we will get an area of about 80 sq metres. In this way, human lungs are designed to have maximum surface area for exchange of gases.
