The molecules in each state of matter are arranged in different ways, which give them distinguished properties.
- In solids, the molecules are very closely packed. There is no room for movement and hence on supplying external energy such as heat or electricity, they vibrate vigorously in their fixed position.
- This gives solids the properties of malleability and ductility.
- In liquids, the molecules are slightly farther apart from each other. They have limited movement and hence conduct energy in the form of heat and electricity better than solids.
- This gives liquids the property to easily take the shape of any container.
- Gases have the most loosely packed molecules and hence can flow very easily. Hence, they cover very large volumes and are easily compressible.
