In meiosis ( the cell division that occurs for the formation of gametes in the gonads ), the number of chromosomes is reduced to half the total number , I.e, 23 chromosomes ... this condition is called as haploid condition

This is significant because on fertilization of the nucleus of sperm ( containing 23 chromosomes) with the nucleus of the ovum ( 23 chromosomes) the normal number chromosomes ( 46 or 23 pairs ) will be restored in the zygote formed .. this is called as diploid condition
