The poles of the Earth are fixed by the axis of Earth's rotation. The Earth rotates on the Geographic North and Geographic South Poles. The Geographic North and South Poles are located where lines of longitude (meridian) converge in the North. Earth's geographical poles and magnetic poles are not located in the same place. In fact they are very far away from each other.
We know that the Earth is a big magnet. If you are standing on the Geographic North Pole holding a compass in your hand, it would point towards Northern Canada at Ellesmere Island. There is a difference of around 500 kilometers between the Geographical North Pole and Magnetic North Pole. This difference is increasing day by day.
