The members of the lok sabha elect a speaker and deputy speaker from among themselves.
The Speaker presides over the session of the Lok Sabha. He/she keeps the House in order. He/she may be a member of any political party, but once elected, he/she has to conduct his/her business impartially. At present, Sumitra Mahajan of the BJP is the speaker of the Lok Sabha. In the absence of the Speaker, the Deputy Speaker presides over the sessions.
