The human brain is a very delicate organ. Therefore it needs to be protected carefully. A bony box known as cranium covers the brain. The brain is covered by three protective layers called meninges. The space between the meninges is filled with a fluid called cerebrospinal fluid. This fluid protects the brain against shocks and mechanical injuries. This fluid also maintains a constant pressure in and around the brain.

The cells of the body's surface form the outer layer of skin. Inside the body, epithelial cells form the lining of the mouth and alimentary canal and protect these organs. Epithelial tissues help in absorption of water and nutrients.
