The definition of urban areas varies from one country to another. Some of the common basis of classification are size of population, occupational structure and administrative setup

Presently 48 per cent of the world's population lives in urban settlements compared to only 3 per cent in the year 1800 (Table 10.1). The definition of urban areas varies from one country to another.
