Velds are the temperate grasslands of South Africa. Apart from sheep rearing and dairy farming, which form its most important occupations, gold and diamond mining are yet another fields people are involved into(with Johannesburg being considered the Gold capital and Kimberley's diamond mines being equally famous). These mining activities(involving Gold and Diamond), have led to the establishment of trade ties between South Africa and Britain, as a result of which South Africa has become a British colony.

In areas where Coal and Iron are present, development of Iron and Steel industries have taken place.
